Question about reinstalling the game

Post by CinnamonBean on Sat 27 Oct 2018, 15:19

First and foremost I am sorry if this is in the wrong section! This is my first post on this website!  Oh my...

Now onto my question, I am temporarily deleting The Sims 4 from my laptop due to a lack of space on my laptop. But I plan on putting it back onto my laptop later on. So I moved the entire game folder from my Program Files (x86) to my external hard disk. When I am attempting to reinstalling the game, can I just drag and drop the game folder from my external hard disk back to Program Files (x86) or do I have to reinstall everything from the torrents again?  Oh my...

Just copy the items from the game folder from your external disk. No need to install it all again.

Hello and welcome to the Forum,

Yes, you can simply transfer the installation folders from one computer to another, and intermediate devices (external drives) that are in-between. In general it's also a good idea to backup your games and stuff to external devices, in case of a problem with your computer and you need to re-install Windows. No need to re-download these items at least.

Oh I see but the reason I asked this was because I was concerned about the specific order of installing the game and it's expansions! So there is no need to worry about that?

If you copy your existing "The Sims 4"-folder under C:\Program Files (x86), and then transfer it onto your external drive, you are creating a copy of your existing game, to put it in simple terms.

By extension, if you then proceed to copy the game folder from your external harddrive and onto the new computer, the exact same installation is transferred to the new computer as well, without the need for re-installing. So on the Sims 4 game now located on the new computer, it's like you are starting off from where you left, on the old computer.

You'll also need to take the folder Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4 from the old machine, and transfer it onto the corresponding location on the new computer as well. This is so that you can continue with your old saves, mods, etc.

Maybe I misunderstood your concern, if so feel free to clarify. But from what you describe, no...I don't really see any need to "re-install" anything. Maybe one last tip though: whenever you copy game installation folders, do NOT interrupt the process, and also make sure that you are not copy/pasting anything else simultaneously, besides those game folders.
